You can now get a great full-scale view of what it will be like to drive through the SR 99 tunnel.
The WSDOT and local business groups just opened a new interactive information center profiling the project and detailing some of the history of Pioneer Square. It's called Milepost 31 which marks where SR 99 enters Pioneer Square.
A huge image of the tunnel adorns the back wall giving you a full-scale view from a driver's perspective.
The center also features models of each end of the tunnel, an interactive screen showing the layout of the construction sites and information on the giant tunnel-digging machine.
That machine is scheduled to arrive from Japan in March of 2013 then start digging about two months later. The machine will go down to a maximum debth of about 200 feet says tunnel project manager Chris Dixon.
As many as 40 workers will be on the job inside the tunnel.
Milepost 31 is open from Tuesday to Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
