TUKWILA, Wash. -- A new construction project is tying up a main route to Sea-Tac Airport. Tens of thousands of drivers normally who take SR 518 to avoid Interstate 5 will have to factor in more time or look for an alternate route during the summer travel season.

The stretch of SR 518 is nearly 50 years old and it's starting to show its age with severe cracks. The Washington State Department of Transportation says it's critical to replace the damaged section with new concrete panels. But, the construction is going to impact 112,000 vehicles that use SR 518.

“If you're going to the airport to pick someone up or catching a red-eye, it's going to affect you. We recommend taking 188th (Street) to International Boulevard (Pacific Highway S.) to avoid going through the work zone, but you're going to need to add extra time. That's the key,” said Bart Treece with WSDOT.

During construction, drivers should expect lane reductions overnight on the weekdays and early mornings. On some weekends, there will be a complete shutdown of eastbound SR 518 overnight. WSDOT is warning drivers to add an extra 15 minutes or longer to their trip.

The project is expected to be completed this fall.

Here is a look at this week's overnight closures:
