The Washington State Department of Transportation has started to make progress on the southern end of State Route 99.

Photos from WSDOT show the new South Atlantic Street overpass beginning to take form near CenturyLink Field and Safeco Field.

The overpass will be open at the end of the year. It should fix a bottleneck near the port where trains often block traffic.

Work will continue as WSDOT crews prepare to start using Bertha, the world's largest-diameter tunneling machine, to dig the tunnel that will replace the Alaskan Way Viaduct.
