There may be no need to honk at drivers trying to sneak through the Mercer Mess by stopping in the middle of the intersection. They're getting what's coming to them.

Seattle Police planned to stake out Mercer Street and Dexter Avenue and write $124 ticket to anyone caught blocking the intersection Monday afternoon.

Mercer and Dexter has become one of the more difficult intersections along the Mercer Mess, taking some drivers as long as 30 minutes to get through.

For drivers who have to endure it every day, they say blocking the intersection is pretty common.

"People are blocking the intersection everywhere," said David Early, a construction worker who works nearby. "You can't get across the street, you have to walk out into the middle of the intersection to cross the street."

In an effort to stop drivers from sneaking through, large "X's" have been painted across the intersection and warning signs are posted on street corners.

Officers were also out last week warning drivers that they would soon be ticketed.

Seattle's Department of Transportation said they are continually working on synching traffic lights along Mercer to make the commute run more smoothly.
