During the one-week span that westbound Interstate 90 in Bellevue will be reduced to one lane, which starts July 18, there will be three events happening in Seattle that will likely mean a lot more congestion on alternate routes getting into Seattle.
The Bite of Seattle, July 18-20
Some 500,000 people could attend this event over three days at Seattle Center.
Seattle Sounders FC vs. Tottenham Hotspur, July 19, 1 p.m.
This is an international friendly, so the Sounders will open up the upper bowl at Century Link Field to sell extra tickets. That means some 60,000 fans could make their way into SODO.
Seattle Mariners vs. New York Mets and Baltimore Orioles, July 21 - 25
The Mariners are in the hunt for the playoffs, so the team has garnered extra interest this year and a boost in attendance. This will be the team’s first homestand since the All-Star break.
Why wasn’t the I-90 work scheduled for another week? The Washington State Department of Transportation said it had a very small window to make it happen for various reasons:
- Closures of the SR 520 bridge were already scheduled for the weekend before the I-90 project and the weekend after it’s completed.
- WSDOT had to wait for Peregrine falcons who nest on the bridge to leave, which is usually by mid-July.
- Waiting the following week would run the closures right up to Seafair festivities.
“There is never a good time to do a closure like this because someone is always going to be inconvenienced,” said WSDOT Regional Administrator Lorena Eng.
