Snow preparations underway

SEATTLE – Western Washington residents are getting ready for a new round of snow expected Wednesday night into Thursday.

A snow advisory is in effect until 6 p.m. Thursday, with 1 to 4 inches of snow possible in the lower elevations of Western Washington.

KING 5 meteorologist Shannon O'Donnell says there will be increasing clouds overnight with snowfall beginning around sunrise Thursday. Showers will linger into the afternoon hours. O'Donnell predicts the snow will stick.

The Pierce County Department of Emergency Management says it plans to be ready with extra snow plows and sanders starting at 4 a.m. for the morning commute.

Drivers are getting prepared by getting their snow tires mounted on their cars. Wednesday was another dangerous day on the roads in Snohomish County. Several serious accidents were reported, with some crash victims sent to the hospital.

In the mountain passes, chains were required for some of the time on both Snoqualmie and Stevens passes. With all those drivers coming back home from Christmas, people stopping to chain up added to a busy commute. It's a $500 fine for not chaining up your car when chains are required.

More snow expected for Oregon

Snow is also in the forecast for much of Oregon.

One to 4 inches of snow are expected in the Rogue Valley in Southern Oregon, and higher-elevation spots in the Portland area could get more than 3 inches Thursday before the snow changes to rain.

Officials with the City of Portland say they will monitor the weather throughout the night and into the morning, and are prepared to send out trucks with anti-icing chemicals.
