Seahawks fans pack cold, wet Qwest Field

SEATTLE - For many Seahawks fans it was a major league effort to get to Sunday's match against the Jets at Qwest Field.

But nearly a full house turned out in the cold, wet weather to watch a team with just three wins this season -- in a game few will ever forget.

The "huddle" took on new meaning at Qwest - as in huddle for warmth. Fans warmed up at tailgate cookouts.  Others gathered around the traditional burning of the opponent's jersey.

Some of the concession stands in the stadium were closed down -- apparently because people couldn't get to work today. Bleachers had to be shoveled before fans could arrive.

Early Sunday morning, the fans boarded Sounder trains four hours before game time, hoping for an uneventful trip. Some, though, found only frustration. It was a two-hour trip from Tacoma for some as crews cleared ice from the tracks with propane torches. The train was packed tighter than a snowball.

"Bunch of people and it's hot and stinky," Jennifer Reed said. "You hope people took showers."

The Seattle Seahawks upset the Jets 13-3 in snow Sunday.

And for those who did finally make it to their snowy seats this Sunday - it was well worth the trip.

Seattle's Maurice Morris sliced through the snow like a sled for a season-high 116 yards and John Carlson scored the only touchdown on a short pass from backup Seneca Wallace as the lowly Seahawks ended New York's stay atop the AFC East with a 13-3 upset.

Mike Holmgren, Brett Favre's confidant and former coach in Green Bay, went out a winner in his final home game as the leader in Seattle -- largely because Favre came up short when the Jets (9-6) needed him most.

"This is the best place on Earth on Sunday," football fan Lance Randall said. "No better place to be."
