Dentist's license suspended for over-sedating patient

SHORELINE, Wash. – A dentist is in trouble after a female patient was found at his office drugged, with no clothes on from the waist down.

Late Friday, the Shoreline office of Dr. Chris Wodja was closed. Nothing at the office or on his Web site informed his patients that his license had been suspended for alleged inappropriate conduct with a female patient.

Dr. Chris Wodja

"She was in such a state that she doesn't really remember what happened to her," said Laurie Jinkins, Wash. Dept. of Health.

The state says the young female patient came in after hours on October 17 for treatment of an abscessed tooth. There she "ingested two tablets of Triazolam" – a sedative.

The charges claim Wodja contacted the patient's roommate and requested she bring "the additional four tablets of Triazolam" he prescribed to the office so the patient could take them for "the desired effect."

When the patient's two roommates arrived at the office's backdoor, they observed the patient wandering with "a see-through gown" and "was only wearing a tank-top without any pants or underwear."

"Really putting her in a sexually compromised position, which was totally inappropriate. Leaving her in a state that she had to go to the hospital because she was so overly medicated," said Jinkins.

The patient's roommates eventually demanded entry into the office and then took the patient to Harborview Medical Center.

KING 5 has learned Dr. Chris Wodja was previously convicted of assaulting a 16-year-old girl.

According to the statement of charges, Wodja pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault and battery in 1999 of a 16-year-old Boston girl.

The state says it was aware of the conviction and it takes all that into consideration before granting license to practice.

"It's certainly something the Dental Commission would look at and it would be part of their decision making. And in this case they decided to go ahead and license him in 2002," said Jinkins.

But now with these new charges, the state decided enough is enough.

Neither Dr. Wodja or his attorney could be reached for comment Friday.

The state says the King County Sheriff's Department is conducting a criminal investigation. State authorities are also looking for any other potential victims.

Anyone with more information in this case is asked to contact the Washington State Department of Health.
