Police at funeral for Southcenter Mall shooting victim
07:06 PM PST on Saturday, November 29, 2008
SEATTLE - Close to 200 family members and friends packed into a small south Seattle funeral home Saturday to say goodbye to Daiquan Jones, a 16-year-old killed in a shooting at the Southcenter Mall.
Police ramped up security outside the funeral home as Jones was laid to rest.
Jones was with a friend at the mall last Saturday when police believe he got into a fight that ended in gunfire.
Police believe Barry Lee Saunders shot Jones and another teen and then fled. The event triggered a massive evacuation and search of the mall.

KING 5 has learned gang tension may have prompted the shooting. Saunders' attorney says his family pled with the 21-year-old to turn himself in before rival gangs got to him.
Saunders was eventually nabbed in Portland on Wednesday, but authorities believe the Southcenter shooting perhaps prompted a retaliatory attack on Sunday, when someone shot two teens near a Rainier Valley mini-mart.
Those fears prompted Seattle police officers to make themselves very visible outside the funeral home while mourners paid tribute to Jones.

Some people who attended the funeral said there was a message during the service to end a string of violence.
Saunders waved extradition to Washington state and could be arraigned on charges related to the shooting a couple weeks from now.
