Future of ferries to be discussed

11:04 AM PST on Monday, November 26, 2007

By CHRIS DANIELS / KING 5 News

PORT TOWNSEND, Wash. - Port Townsend and Whidbey Island residents finally have a way to get back and forth this morning. Passenger ferry service is now scheduled between the two ports after several days of disruption.

Leaders to discuss future of idle ferries

There is a meeting scheduled for Monday night where Washington State Ferries leaders and naval architects will brief the media, lawmakers and residents about the future of the idled ferries.

One of the steel electric ferries serviced a run between Keystone and Port Townsend. Late Sunday afternoon, passenger ferry service resumed between the two ports. But that's just a temporary fix. There is still no car ferry service between these two ports and won't be most likely until after the first of the year.

Last week, the day before Thanksgiving, DOT secretary Paula Hammond grounded four 80 year old vessels after a inspection report on one of them noticed heavy hull pitting, which could result in cracking.

Hammond says she wanted to err on the side of caution and make the move before the holiday. It caused a major headache for anyone trying to get from or to the Olympic peninsula.

Washington State Ferries has moved a 149-foot passenger ferry, originally slated for auction, into position to move people back and forth.
