The fire at Little Amazon Fish and Pet in north Seattle was started accidentally by an overheated wire.

SEATTLE - Linh Nguyen was still cleaning up Tuesday afternoon after a fire gutted her North Seattle pet store early Tuesday morning.

"We're trying to rescue as much as we can," she said. "We don't know if they'll survive or not."

The fire broke out at the Little Amazon Fish and Pet Store on Aurora Avenue at about 1 a.m.

Firefighters knocked down the flames in about 10 minutes, but the damage had been done. About 100 birds, reptiles and other small animals, along with thousands of fish, were killed.

The store is a total loss.

Seattle firefighters believe the fire was accidentally started by an overheated wire.

Nguyen was able to rescue a rabbit, three guinea pigs and a gerbil.

She has put them up for adoption, and hopes they can find a new home somewhere in the Seattle area.

Nguyen believes insurance will cover most of her loss, and she hopes to rebuild her business.

There were no injuries.

A benevolent account has been set up at Washington Mutual to help the owner of the store. You may visit any branch and ask to donate to "Friends of Little Amazon Pets."
