Man shot by trick-or-treaters
11:13 AM PDT on Friday, November 2, 2007
BURLINGTON, Wash. – They were dressed as trick-or-treaters, but instead of candy, they wanted money.
Two men held a gun to a woman’s head and then shot her husband on Halloween night in Burlington.
Family members said that Jose Esquival-Andrad heard a knock at his home on Spruce Street, picked up a bowl of candy and rushed outside. That’s when the men pulled out their weapons and demanded money.
"Put a gun on my sister-in-law in the head, they did it inside the house,” said Alejandro Esquival-Andrad, the victim’s brother.
Their neighbor says he heard a loud bang, then a scream for help and Jose was lying on the ground.
Jose was shot in the abdomen. His brother says the bullet traveled through his body and down to his leg.
Witnesses say the men were young – maybe 19 or 20 years old – wearing masks and capes.
At least two other neighbors believe the same adult trick-or-treaters came to their homes, but only asked for candy.
Ruben Lopez, who lives two doors away, says because it was Halloween he didn’t hesitate to open his door.
Police do not have a good description of the men because they were in costume and they have not released a description of the costumes.
The victim is still in the hospital, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
Anyone with information in this case is asked to contact the Burlington Police.
