Sequim High School football player in intensive care

11:00 AM PDT on Tuesday, October 24, 2006

Eric Wilkinson reports

SEATTLE - A Sequim High School football player remained in intensive care at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle Monday.

Seventeen-year-old Adrien Gault was taken to the hospital after he went into a coma at Friday night's football game in Sequim.

His injury happened even before the game began. He was involved in a head-to-head collision with a teammate during pregame warmups.

About 30 minutes later, Gault complained of headaches during the game and was taken out. He then went into seizures and slipped into the coma.

17-year-old Sequim High School football player Adrien Gault suffered a concussion at his game in Sequim, WA, on Friday Oct. 20, 2006.

"He had foam coming out of his mouth," said his very distraught mother, Patricia McCarter.

Surgeons operated on Gault over the weekend and removed part of his skull to relieve pressure.

Gault has regained consciousness. His family members say he is making eye contact and communicating with them. It's not known how long Gault will remain in the hospital.

Doctors plan to re-attach the part of his skull removed this weekend in about three months.

This is the second time this month that a young football player has suffered a serious head injury.

Thirteen-year-old Zackery Lystedt remains in serious condition at Harborview Medical Center after a hit in a game for Tahoma Junior High earlier this month.

Doctors say catastrophic head injuries like this are rare, but up to 20 percent of high school football players suffer concussions.

"Concussions add up and if you've had a concussion you're two to three times more likely to have a second one," said Dr. Randy Chestnut at Harborview.

In fact, Gault had suffered a concussion during a play earlier in the season. He had only been cleared two play again two weeks ago.

Doctors say the good news for Gault is that he isn't paralyzed, but doctors still aren't sure of the full extent of his injuries.
