2-alarm arson at Clover Park Tech
02:51 PM PDT on Wednesday, October 8, 2008
LAKEWOOD, Wash. - Fire investigators now say a two-alarm fire at Clover Park Technical College in Lakewood Wednesday was intentionally set..
At about 4:30 a.m., a custodian called 911, saying portable building 39 at the college's main campus in the 4500 block of Steilacoom Boulevard Southwest was on fire.
Crews from Tacoma, McChord Air Force Base, University Place and Lakewood could not save the building.
The fire, called "stubborn" by firefighters, burned for hours, mainly in the building's attic above the classroom's sprinkler system.
"There is an inaccessible space in the roof and that's where that fire is located," said Jenny Sharp of the Lakewood Fire Department. Another shed-like building, where supplies and toys were stored, was also damaged.
Debra Chase-Deitrich, who taught early care education in the classroom said she was in shock.
"It's hard to watch. I still want to have hope something can be retrieved, but they say there's going to be water damage and smoke damage," she said.
Fire investigators said nothing could be salvaged. Students wonder what that means for them.
"Probably the computers are all ruined. I don't think they'll be having class in there for the rest of the year," said student Amber Phillips.
Later in the day Sharp confirmed investigators determined the fire was intentionally started in the shed.
Students and staff say they lost a lot.
"All of the documents, all of the materials I use for teaching. How am I going to reproduce them?" said Chase-Deitrich.
Firefighters were able to keep the fire contained to one classroom, and that's a good thing because the portable right next door was full of new computers that had just arrived.
