SEATTLE - As many as 10,000 Seattle City Light customers were without power Saturday afternoon after a storm with winds of more than 40 mph blew through the region.

The agency was responding to three major outages in South Seattle, Northeast Seattle and Lake Forest Park.

By 5 p.m. Saturday power had been restored to all but about 6,000 Seattle City Light customers.

In Lake Forest Park some businesses in the town center shut down because of the outage. Employees at Wild Birds Unlimited kept operating with flashlights and battery-powered calculators, but business wasn't the same.

"It's hard to process credit cards and if somebody has an account we can't access their information," said JoAnne Dailey.

Seattle City Light said it had called in additional crews to help restore power.

In addition, a spokesperson for Puget Sound Energy said the agency was responding to reports of small, scattered outages caused by high winds and tree branches stuck in power lines.

Powerful winds made a mess of a Queen Anne construction site. Scaffolding at an apartment building on Taylor and Lee was ripped apart by the turbulent weather. Some of the scaffolding fell onto another building, causing minor damage.

And traffic was diverted after strong winds blew over a tree on Fourth and Madison in downtown Seattle. Fourth Avenue was reduced to two lanes while crews worked to remove the tree.

KING 5 Meteorologist Chris Warren said wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour were reported at Fairview Christian School in Seattle. Everett saw 42 mph gusts at Paine Field, and Bremerton saw 44 mph gusts.

A high wind advisory was in effect until 9 p.m. Saturday. And a high surf warning was in effect until 11 p.m. Saturday.

Warren said a chance of showers would remain throughout the night, but winds would diminish Sunday.

High pressure will end showers Sunday morning in most areas, and permit partial clearing both Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Another low will approach Monday afternoon, resulting in a return of rainfall.
