Parking spot battle ends with car inside store

10:31 PM PDT on Friday, September 28, 2007

Associated Press

Police say it's lucky more people weren't hurt.

BELLEVUE, Wash. - A driver rushing to beat someone else to a parking spot slammed into a department store in Bellevue this evening, injuring a 14-year-old girl inside the building.

Bellevue Police Corporal Marcia Harnden says the girl is expected to be treated and released from Overlake Hospital with scrapes and bruises, while the driver, a 37-year-old woman from Bellevue, has been arrested for investigation of driving under the influence.

Harnden says the driver stepped on the gas to beat the other person to the parking space, then couldn't stop.

The Lincoln sedan smashed through the automatic sliding glass doors of the T.J. Maxx and took out several clothing racks. It came to a stop 20 yards inside the store.

Harnden says the driver exhibited "obvious signs of impairment," but not from alcohol. Toxicology results were not expected for at least a month.

The driver is likely to be held liable for the damage.
