CENTRALIA, Wash. – A 15-year-old boy was struck and killed by an Amtrak train in Centralia Saturday afternoon, police said.
He was on his bike when he was hit. Police say a friend was following close behind, but was uninjured.
The collision happened in the 600 block of South Tower Avenue.
Witnesses who heard the crash say the teens crossed the tracks at a designated crossing.
"I heard a big, like, crash against metal and then I heard like just like the bike come smashing down," said Jeff Carlisle.
"I didn't hear any whistles," said Panther Wade Risling. "Just the next thing you know we just hear the train coming to a stop down this way when all the commotion was coming on."
A witness said that students at a nearby elementary school cross the tracks at that location every day.
Amtrak officials say no one aboard the train was hurt.
The train was traveling from Portland to Bellingham.
