Parkland home gutted by fireworks-caused blaze

PARKLAND, Wash. - The Pierce County Fire Marshal is investigating the Fourth of July blaze that destroyed a woman's rental home.
"My house was just gone and everything was burnt," said Deara Lewis.
Shaken up and very fragile, Deara Lewis thought her baby was coming on the 4th of July. Instead, she lost all of her possessions in an avoidable holiday fire.
"I just had a baby showerl, actually and I had a lot of stuff for her, baby seat, clothes, and it's just gone," she said.
Friday night, a medic unit rushed her to the hospital with contractions. While she was gone, fireworks came through the window, landed on the couch and the house was gutted by fire.
"The bottom line, the area near Parkland last night was a war zone," said Wayne Garden of Central Pierce Fire and Rescue. "There was a tremendous amount of fireworks going all over."
Fire investigators say some illegal fireworks were set off across the street from Lewis' house at a school parking lot during a holiday gathering of neighbors.
On Saturday, neighbors said the crowd was using "safe and sane fireworks" and that the fire was an accident.
"The key comes down to the individuals who are capable and knowledgable enough to be responsible about it and not leaving in the hands of people who aren't," said Jeff Horning.
On Saturday, Maurice Clemons, who owns the house, surveyed the damage.
"Obviously they weren't responsible. Look what happened. I lost the home," he said.
The Red Cross is helping Deara Lewis.
