Mariners cut Bret Boone

06:54 PM PDT on Sunday, July 3, 2005

Associated Press

SEATTLE - Seattle has designated second baseman Bret Boone for assignment after he struggled at the plate for most of the first half of the season.

The Mariners have 10 days to trade the three-time All-Star or put him on waivers.

Boone was recently benched for five games to work on his swing and it helped briefly. But manager Mike Hargrove says the 12-year veteran has reverted to his previous habits.

Boone tearfully talked about his departure Sunday.

The 36-year-old Boone is hitting .231 with seven homers and 34 rbi's this season. The Mariners are responsible for the remainder of his $8.25 million salary this season.
