State ferry evacuated after bomb scare

EDMONDS, Wash. - A casual comment about a bomb lead to the evacuation of a Washington state ferry and a long back-up at the Edmonds ferry dock Saturday morning.
"The comment was something like, as the gentlemen were moving a tool box into the trunk of the car, 'lets put the bomb in the trunk,'" said Sgt. Craig Johnson, of Washington State Patrol.
The remark was overheard by another passenger and reported to the crew at around 11 a.m., as cars were boarding the Spokane ferry, bound for Kingston,
The suspect later told police he made the comment in jest.
But the Spokane was evacuated and the bomb-sniffing dogs got to work.
Ferry service was delayed for two hours during the investigation. At the same time, passengers on another boat - the Walla Walla - were delayed and circling out in Puget Sound.
"We just circled for I don't know how long," said Michelle Singleton. "At first there was just a hold up and we didn't know why."

Ferry service was delayed for two hours during the investigation.
No bomb was found, but the state patrol says the quick response shows the ferry security system works.
The 30-year-old Seattle man who made the comment was taken into custody on outstanding warrants.
Washington State Patrol is pursuing the possibility of criminal charges in the case.
