Gun found at Tacoma school

07:13 AM PDT on Wednesday, May 9, 2007

By JIM FORMAN / KING 5 News

TACOMA – A gun found Tuesday afternoon inside Mount Tahoma High School has officials beefing up security for Wednesday's classes.

Tacoma Police said they aren't sure why a 16-year-old brought a gun to the school, but it didn't take long for students to report the gun. A campus patrol officer found the gun inside the student's locker and arrested the student. Police don't know if the gun was loaded or if the student intended to use it.

Security at Tahoma High School in Tacoma will increase Wednesday after a gun was discovered inside a student's locker Tuesday.

The Tacoma School District stresses that no one was injured and the arrest was made quickly. No further action was necessary, but a letter was sent home to parents to alert them to the situation.

The principal told parents that no one was ever in immediate danger and he said that it took a great deal of courage and integrity for students to come forward and do the right thing.

Some parents were concerned, but not surprised.

"You've got to start in the home, keep telling them," said one parent.  "They're the ones who have to make the decisions."

"It's dangerous," said one student.  "I wouldn't forget about it because it's a big thing."
