HOODSPORT, Wash. – A woman has died and a man is in critical condition after a shrimp boat overturned Wednesday afternoon, trapping the two inside.
"We just got close to shore," said survivor Ted Roorda, "and the boat just flipped on us."
"It was a hard top Olympic boat and they were pinned inside," said Duke Roorda. "We could hear them talking."
Four people were on board the 20-foot vessel when it somehow overturned near the Sunrise Motel along Highway 101. Earlier reports indicated there were nine people on board.
The hull had to be cut open to pull out the two trapped people, who were unconscious when they were pulled out. They were taken to Mason General Hospital. A 75-year-old woman was later pronounced dead. A 79-year-old man was last listed in critical condition. Both victims are from Hoodsport.
It appears the size of the boat, strong winds and unusual tidal conditions all played roles in the accident.
