A 16-year-old girl was driving a Pontiac Grand Am southbound on 24th Ave. East and was attempting to make a left turn onto Boyer Ave. E. when she lost control and struck a light pole and the jogger.
SEATTLE - A 26-year-old runner was killed this morning when she was struck by a car while she was out for a run.
Seattle Police say at about 9:30 a.m., a 16-year-old girl was driving a Pontiac Grand Am southbound on 24th Ave. East. She had the green light to turn left onto Boyer Ave. E. when she lost control, drove over the curb and struck the woman, who died instantly.
"At this point in the investigation it appears that she was traveling too fast for conditions. The roadway was wet from a previous rainfall," said Renee Witt of the Seattle Police Dept.
Investigators say it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.
Friends of the victim were grief-stricken.
"We're just blown away that she's not with us any more. We just can't believe it," said Jenni Lopez.
"She's one of those types of runners who's just coming into her own. She hasn't even reached where she's supposed to be yet," said Lopez. "That's what's hardest is she had so much promise for her life."
"We constantly get complaints from local residents that they want people to slow down on 24th and Boyer," said Ken Schubert of the Montlake Neighborhood Board. "This intersection... it seems like every few months there's an accident there. People come down 24th, 45-50 mile per hour."
The woman's male running companion was not injured.
