TUKWILA, Wash. – A 26-year-old woman drowned at the Tukwila Pool last week and now the City of Tukwila has initiated an investigation.

KING

Candice Green

Twenty-six-year-old Candice Green was set on learning to swim because of her upcoming honeymoon to Mexico. According to pool officials, she asked to practice underwater maneuvers in the deep end.

Sometime later, a swimmer in a nearby lane noticed Green struggling and notified the lifeguard on duty.

Green was brought up, but was unresponsive.

Medics performed CPR at the pool, but Green died Sunday at Seattle's Harborview Medical Center due to a lack of oxygen to the brain.

According to Rhonda Berry, City Administrator, at least three lifeguards were on duty at the time. Apparently, one lifeguard was teaching a class, another was on the pool deck, and a third was in the lobby.

The aquatics director said all protocols were followed.

According to the police report, her instructor told police that Green "was doing extra work because the victim was considering being a lifeguard."

But the Green's family insists she was a beginning swimmer trying to overcome her fear of the water. Her father says she was a novice swimmer at best and they would like to know why she was allowed to swim alone with a weight at the deep end of the pool.

Green's fiancé says more attention should have been paid.

Candice Green had a promising life ahead of her. She was a college graduate with a degree in chemistry, working as a research technician for Weyerhaeuser.

Candice Green will be remembered on Saturday, April 7, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Puyallup. The service begins at 11 a.m.
