SEATTLE – A deadly collision on the steps of a senior center in South Seattle shut down Rainier Avenue for 4 hours, and police say the man who caused it all has committed a long list of crimes.

Witnesses said a vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed. They said they heard a screech of tires and a loud crash before two cars ended up on the front walkway of a senior center.

The driver of the black SUV was speeding down Rainier Avenue South, tried turning onto Holly by the senior center, and hit the beige sedan waiting for the light.

The elderly man driving the sedan died at the scene.

Police said the man who caused the crash appeared to be intoxicated, driving a stolen car.

Witnesses said the driver of the black SUV got out of the car to leave the scene, but turned around to retrieve something from the vehicle.

"It was horrible. He didn't even stop to see if the man was OK or anything," said one witness.

Officers caught up with him a mile away.

Police said the suspect, who is in his 20s, appeared to be intoxicated and it appears he was driving a stolen car. He was booked into jail for vehicular homicide.

Police said the victim is a Seattle man in his 90s.
