March madness: Snow in the city
10:30 PM PDT on Friday, March 28, 2008
SEATTLE - From Seattle to the Hood Canal, the snow keeps popping up all over Western Washington.
A mix of snow and rain was falling again Friday evening, and the first part of the weekend could get even more interesting.
Friday morning on Queen Anne, the cherry blossoms of spring were dusted by the snow flakes of winter. Magnolia was slathered with a dose of wet snow. And in downtown Seattle, it was time to walk fast or huddle under an umbrella.
From Seattle to Tacoma, Gig Harbor and Hoodsport, Western Washington got snowed on Friday.
Accumulations were spotty, but the white stuff still caught many by surprise.
For students in Seattle, it was the last day of school before spring break.
"It's spring. I don't know why it's snowing. That's weird," said Ben Ison, a student a Loyal Heights Elementary.

KING 5 Meteorologist Rich Marriot said the weather was unexpected for this time of year.
"It's unusual to see it this cold and to see snow falling – it doesn't happen very often," he said.
Unlike Thursday morning, where frigid temperatures and black ice on the roads created treacherous driving conditions, the Friday morning commute appeared headache-free. But classes were delayed and bus routes were changed for a few schools. Check updates for your school.
Marriot said more rain and snow showers were expected Friday night, with accumulations up to 2 inches, mainly in hills above 500 feet. The same is expected Saturday.
"It will probably be concentrated in the convergence zone, in north King and south Snohomish counties," he said.
But he said the mountains could see up to 10 inches of new snow by Saturday morning. Overnight lows in the Cascades will dip to the 20s and winds of up to 15 miles per hour are expected.
Jane Watson
KING 5 viewer Jane Watson sent in this photo of snow accumulating in West Seattle Friday afternoon. She writes: "The dogs are loving it, but my spring gardening isn't!"
On Sunday, the weather's expected to dry out in Puget Sound - clearing in the afternoon to sunshine and bringing temperatures up to the 50s for Monday and Tuesday.
"Spring arrives on Monday with sunshine and highs near 50," said Marriott.
Due to the spring snow, the transportation departments in both Washington and Oregon have extended the deadline for studded tires. In a coordinated effort with Oregon's Department of Transportation, the last day to legally use studded tires this season in both states is Sat., April 5.
Other areas
Another early spring storm continues to drop snow over much of the Inland Northwest. A strong system will continue to bring accumulating snow to the area through Saturday.
For Oregon, a heavy snow warning remains in effect above 500 feet until Saturday noon for the Western Columbia River Gorge, with 3 to 5 inches of new snow possible overnight. Snow showers will decrease later Saturday.
