Seattle man teaches McCain a lesson

10:53 PM PDT on Wednesday, March 28, 2007

SEATTLE – A Seattle man shows the true power of the Internet after setting a trap for presidential candidate John McCain.

The prank appeared on McCain's MySpace page for about an hour Tuesday morning and a Seattle CEO is not just taking responsibility for the joke, he's taking full credit.

Mike Davidson is the CEO for Newsvine.com – a news Web site company based in Seattle. In his space time, he came out with a new way to design a MySpace page.

"I offered this file and sample images up for free use by anybody who wanted it," he said.

The only condition: Mike Davidson asked to be credited and requested users to make their own imagery.

Senator John McCain of Arizona was one of the people who used Davidson's code on his MySpace page. But Davidson soon noticed that McCain had not followed the ruled of Internet etiquette.

"Not only was he using my code and not crediting me, but he was actually pulling one of my images directly off my server," he aid.

The so-called "borrowed" image was a section below McCain's photo on his MySpace page.

"It's a copyright violation on his part. I'm not going to prosecute him for it. I'm sure he's a good person. But as a slap on the wrist why don't we do something funny," he said.

So Tuesday morning, John McCain appeared to have reversed his position on gay marriage.

The section read: "Today I announce that I have reversed my position and come out in full support of gay marriage, particularly marriage between passionate females."

"What I did was change an image on my own server that was being used in an unauthorized manner by John McCain's people," said Davidson.

The joke didn't last long. After about an hour, it was removed from McCain's Web site.

McCain's campaign could not be reached for comment, but Davidson pointed out that McCain has reached out to him on his MySpace page.

"They haven't contacted me yet, but they did add me as a friend. I added them back. John McCain is now in my top 8, so I guess we're BFF's now," he said.

Davidson says no laws were broken and the only server he touched was his own.
