MARYSVILLE, Wash. - An elderly man was struck and killed by a car while trying to cross a street Friday morning.

According to the Marysville Police Department, the accident occurred at about 5:20 a.m. at State Avenue near 100th Street Northeast.

Police say the 87-year-old victim, who is from Marysville, was crossing State Avenue when a 47-year-old driver hit him. Police say he was not in a marked crossing.

When emergency response crews arrived on the scene the man was not breathing and was unresponsive. He was pronounced dead on the scene.

After a thorough investigation, Marysville police do not believe the driver was speeding. The man - also from Marysville - was in the car with his wife. He was questioned by police and released.

"They are very shaken up," said Lt. Jeff Goldman.

Marysville police have finished their investigation and State Avenue is re-opened to traffic.

Word of the accident spread among the senior citizens at the Marysville Senior Center, many saying they know just how dangerous crossing a busy street can be.
