Public to sound off on Seattle Center revamp plan
01:23 PM PST on Thursday, January 24, 2008
SEATTLE - Seattle wants public input tonight on the environmental impacts of new plans to spruce up the aging Seattle Center tourist attraction.
Everyone agrees something needs to be done to spruce up the center. But the big questions are how much will these changes cost and how will they affect the environment?
After interviewing more than 5,000 Seattle Center visitors and employees, the Century 21 committee has come up with a proposal to turn the Seattle Center into a major destination again.
"They started out with some basic questions," said Robert Nellams, Seattle Center director. "One is the basic mission of the Seattle Center and, two, what would you like to see here."
The proposal includes more green and open space, turning the Fun Forest into a new activity center and a skatepark. But the plans for Memorial Stadium continue to be a hot button issue.
Two of the four plans call for the stadium to be demolished to make way for an amphitheater with a parking garage underneath.
Veterans like Guy Gallipeau have been fighting against this. He spoke out more than a year ago, when there were rumors the stadium could be torn down.
"The memorial stadium was built in 1947," said Gallipeau. "The Seattle Center didn't get there 'til 1962."
Century 21 is fleshing out the plan and gathering public input on the environmental and economic impact of these plans. All of this will be submitted by the Seattle City Council to Seattle voters as part of the November 2008 Legacy Levy.
The public meeting will be held at the Lopez Room at the Seattle Center starting 6:30 p.m. tonight, Thursday, Janurary, 24.
