Boy sexually assaulted at Tacoma restaurant
12:58 PM PST on Thursday, January 24, 2008
TACOMA, Wash. – The sexual assault of a 5-year-old boy inside a restroom at a Chuck E. Cheese's eatery near the Tacoma Mall has police asking for the public's help.
"It's disgusting, I can't believe it would happen here," one patron said.
Tacoma Police say on Wednesday, January 9th, around 6 p.m., the boy went into the bathroom alone and a man inappropriately touched the boy. Detectives say the child was sexually assaulted in one of the stalls.
The boy's father, who went to see what was taking so long, walked in to find his son in trouble.
"He grabbed up his son, he confronted the suspect who walked out very quickly and left the business," said Brad Graham, a Tacoma Police detective. "We're hoping people who were in the business that night will remember a single male sitting there watching children."
Police have released a sketch of the suspect in hopes that it will trigger a memory for someone who can lead detectives to him. The suspect is described as a white male about 30 years old. He is 6’ tall and weighs about 165 pounds. He has brown hair and a thin moustache. He was wearing a Seahawk stocking cap, gray fleece vest, tan pants and brown hiking boots.
Police are eager to find out if anybody there that night took pictures or video inside the Chuck E. Cheese's that might have a shot of the suspect in the background. The restaurant did not have surveillance cameras.
Police also believe the suspect wasn't there with anyone else and entered the restaurant alone, quite possibly with the sole purpose of preying on young children. They call the incident isolated and say there have been no solid tips.
The boy is still struggling.
"The family reports he is having nightmares and wants to make sure the doors are double locked each night. He wants the dogs in the house," Graham said.
Tacoma Police say they waited two weeks to release the information on the attack because they wanted to get a firm sketch of the suspect first.
