SEATTLE – A Seattle Police officer was injured in a shootout late Wednesday evening in North Seattle at 88th & Aurora Avenue and a suspect was killed.

Several blocks of Aurora Ave. were shut down.

The call of an "officer down" went out at about 10:15 p.m.

Witnesses said there was a shootout between undercover officers and at least one suspect. They said an unmarked police SUV was taking fire and officers returned fire.

"They were chasing probably about three guys and they all went different directions, and the guy they kept chasing turned around and started firing at the windshield, and the other cop got out of the car and started shooting. The guy was down within a matter of minutes," described one witness. "I know I only heard the tail-end of it, but I heard at least ten shots."

The suspect was dead at the scene at the corner of 90th & Aurora.

The officer was taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He had been shot in the abdomen. The officer under went surgery but his condition is not known. Sgt. Deanna Nollette says the officer was alert and conscious when he left he scene.
