Dog's owner talks about the ordeal

TACOMA, Wash. – Rescuers responded to a report of a man and two dogs that slipped down a steep cliff in Point Defiance Park Wednesday afternoon.

Christian Tollefson was walking his dogs, Chug and Sammy, on a trail near Five-Mile Drive when Chug got curious and began sliding down a 200-foot cliff.

When Chug couldn't get back up, Christian slid down to go after him. But Chug was stuck, and Christian and Sammy slid all the way down to the bottom.

"When I got to the bottom, looking up, I realized what kind of position he was in and I was scared to death," said Tollefson.

The Tacoma Fire Technical Rescue team arrived and firefighter Dan Elgin rapelled down to rescue Chug. He put him in a harness and brought him down the steep cliff.

"Getting the dog rigged into your harness system can be challenging and the fact that you don't know how they will react," he said.

After a harrowing 15 minutes, Chug was back with his owner.

"I really can't thank those guys enough. They really saved the day," said Tollefson.
