Microsoft announces new Xbox One consoles at E3

LOS ANGELES - Microsoft confirmed it will launch an Xbox console this year and in 2017 during its Monday press conference ahead of the Electronic Entertainment Expo.

The Xbox One S is being touted as 40 percent lighter than the original Xbox one, will feature support for 4K and have a redesigned controller. Microsoft said the new console will also have the ability to be placed horizontally or vertically, “in response to fan requests worldwide.”

Xbox One S will have three options for hard drive space: 500GB, 1TB and 2TB launch edition. Xbox said the consoles will launch in August, with the 2TB option costing $399 USD, the 1TB option costing $349 USD and the 500GB version costing $299 USD.

Project Scorpio, which was announced in a video with developers, did not show off any hardware during its reveal. Slated for a Holiday 2017 release, Scorpio is being touted as “the most powerful console ever created” by Xbox. The console is being designed to have 6 teraflops (trillion floating-point operations per second) of GPU, true 4K gaming and high fidelity virtual reality. Xbox Head Phil Spencer said in the briefing that Scorpio was being announced in 2016 so developers could begin designing games for the console now.

For the creative gamer, Xbox talked about its Design Lab in which fans can create their own custom Xbox Wireless Controller. The company said there are 8 million color variations and buyers can get a name laser etched into it. The lab is open for orders in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. Xbox also announced new features for online service Xbox Live, including clubs, “Looking for Group,” cross-play between Xbox and Windows 10 computers, language region independence and Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana.

An E3 press conference wouldn’t be complete without the announcement of new games, which Microsoft had in droves. E3 trailer links available for some titles shown:
