SEATTLE -- Seattle police on Wednesday arrested a man suspected of stealing an SUV with a 10-month-old child inside.

The black Ford Edge SUV was stolen from outside the Seamart convenience store in the 1600 block of SW Holden Street just after 3:15 pm.

Nineteen minutes after police began searching for the suspect, King County Sheriff's deputies and Seattle police found the SUV parked near 8th Avenue SW and SW 99th Street.

Carlisia Minnis said the car was left parked, but it was running. When she saw the baby inside she started checking the door handles.

The driver's side door was open, so she opened the door and rolled down all the windows.

"All I could think about was the baby," she said. "I realize now I probably shouldn't have messed with the car, but my mind was like 'the baby, the baby needs to be OK.'"

Missis said the car had been left in neutral and when it started to roll she jumped in to stop it.

She said she had no idea the SUV had been stolen and she was prepared to deal with a possibly angry parent.

"I was going to do whatever I had to do to make sure the baby was OK," she said.

Police quickly arrived and the baby was reunited with her parents.

"It made me cry actually," said Joleen Russ, who helped Minnis with the SUV. "It was tough to watch. I have kids of my own and I can't imagine what he must've been going through."

Seattle police said it's an important lesson for parents never to leave their children in a car.

"We're not blaming anybody here other than the man who kidnapped this child, said Drew Fowler with SPD. "Given the heart ache and grief that father underwent for that 20 minutes before we were able to re-united him with his child, certainly wasn't worth it."
