Thursday's grand opening of Zara put some new life into Westlake Center.

Referring to Westlake, one shopper said, It was really empty and dead. Once Zara came, that's the only time I'm going in.

Zara is a Spanish, global fashion giant. It's considered trendy and moderately priced.

Zara brings a little bit of fashion to Seattle, which I think we tend to lack, said shopper Natasha Wise.

Just a few blocks west of Westlake, a design firm has been hired to study a transformation of the Pike-Pine corridor.

Pike Street gets more pedestrian traffic than any other of the our streets, said landscape architect Shannon Nichol of Gustafson Guthrie Nichol.

Nichol envisions 3rd and 4th avenues filled with tall trees and a more inviting environment for pedestrians.

The Downtown Seattle Association has hired the firm to recommend design ideas on Pike and Pine, from the Pike Place Market to Capitol Hill.
