CenturyLink located the severed cable Monday evening that is believed to have caused the phone and data outage in the San Juan Islands.
The company believes the fiber optic cable may have been moved and severed by an earthquake, which occurred three minutes before CenturyLink got its first alarm notification.
The fiber was located 280 feet underwater about 5,000 feet from Lopez Island.
Restoring service is a top priority for CenturyLink, and we have pulled resources in from across the country to get these facilities up and running, said Tim Grigar, vice president and general manager of CenturyLink's Western Washington market.
Work on the break had to stop Tuesday morning due to inclement weather and high winds. CenturyLink has a barge and three tug boats to help with the work. Restoration efforts may resume this afternoon depending on the weather.
Crews will splice a new fiber to the severed lines and survey to find a new place to lay the cable.
Verizon Wireless was able to fully restore its network over the weekend. Their team put microwave dishes on towers and at the top of Mount Constitution.
The outage started around 4 a.m. on November 5, 2013.
