SPOKANE, Wash. -- Authorities in Spokane say a police officer's 10-year-old daughter is in stable condition after shooting herself in the leg on Easter with her father's duty weapon.
Spokane police officials announced the shooting Tuesday and said Officer Barry O'Connell was taking time off to care for his daughter. They say he will be assigned to desk duty upon his return while Spokane County sheriff's detectives investigate the shooting.
Sheriff's Deputy Craig Chamberlin tells The Spokesman-Review that the girl was at a gathering with family and friends when she shot herself in the leg. She was taken to a hospital.
Spokane police Officer Jennifer DeRuwe says after the sheriff's investigation is complete, O'Connell will face an internal Police Department investigation into possible policy violations.
