SEATTLE, Wash. -- Mayor Mike McGinn ordered all city departments Friday to suspend advertising in Seattle Weekly due to the paper's connection to Backpage.com, an online classified ad site allegedly used for juvenile sex trafficking
Mayor McGinn fired off an email to his communications director Friday that displayed his frustration with the Seattle Weekly and its parent company Village Voice Media.
City Hall and the Seattle Police Department say they have proof, at least 4 cases of child prostitution are linked to the ads in just the past year. The publication says it screens as best as it can, and is willing to sit down with the city to explain what can be done to address the situation.
Both sides are scheduled to meet next week, so it is not clear what prompted the Mayor's move. But his email obtained by KING 5 News is clear. In it McGinn writes, I want you to have all the departments suspend their advertising in the Seattle Weekly.
The Mayor did indicate his mind is still open on the matter, but for now, the ads are out. I might change my mind after we meet with them next week, but for now I want everything pulled, McGinn wrote.
