A new study will determine whether vitamin D can help diabetes patients avoid the full blow disease.

The National Institute of Health will enroll 2,500 adults with pre-diabetes from 20 centers across the country. Patients will receive a high dose of vitamin D or a placebo pill.

Smaller studies have suggested the supplements can lower the risk for diabetes by 25 percent.
