Over 80 percent of the world's cultures eat insects -- that's over 1.9 billion people worldwide. The Bug Chef, David George Gordon, says that here in North America we are the strange ones.
Bugs are rich in protein; pound for pound they are the same as lean ground beef. They're rich in vitamins, minerals and amino acids, and they are also really abundant said Gordon.
In a new cookbook titled The Eat-A-Bug Cookbook, he shares recipes such as scorpion scaloppini, chocolate-covered grasshoppers and deep fried tarantula.
Gordon is trying to bring this way of eating into the mainstream here in North America.
That's the whole point of my cookbook, is to make that grasshopper into a gourmet item, said Gordon.
The Bug Chef will be holding a fundraiser and bug buffet in September and all proceeds will support the victims of the Cafe Racer shooting. For more information or to order the cookbook, visit David Gordon's website.
