SEATTLE The Internet is about to get much, much, faster.

That s according to Seattle s mayor, computer scientists at the University of Washington, and a company called Gigabit Squared, which together announced plans Thursday to install a high-speed fiber optic broadband and wireless service.

The pilot project will be implemented in 12 different Seattle neighborhoods, with service beginning by the end of 2014.

Mayor Mike McGinn s Office also said the city believes the faster Internet speeds will spur business development, and give consumers another option.

Comcast services 1.1 million people across the state, and said it has no comment on the plan. Gigabit Squared and the city have not said what the cost would be for the new service.
