The Seattle City Council has taken the unusual step of passing an emergency ordinance to ban the building of houses on tiny lots.

The house building issue led to a full house at the council chambers.

This issue is about the development of absurdly large and disproportionate homes on tiny lots for one purpose, profit. said Queen Anne home owner Jonathan Drezner.

Homes being built in backyards were called a loophole by Seattle City Council Member Richard Conlin, who introduced the emergency legislation. The lots were exempted from current zoning laws and had no building restrictions.

Developers have said building on these lots provided affordable homes to people who may not be able to live in Seattle.

The City Council voted unanimously for the emergency ban, while they develop long term legislation.

The ban does not affect homes that are currently permitted and under construction.
