TUKWILA, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks star Richard Sherman made a surprise appearance at Tukwila s Foster High School Friday to inspire students.

In Tukwila I never thought someone like that would come, said Joseph Davison, a student.

Sherman entertained the students at a pep rally, urging them to stay committed to their education.

Nearly 80 percent of students receive free and reduced lunches; others face tough educational barriers because of their background.

People see kids without a lot of opportunities, without a lot of resources and they say they don t have a chance, said Sherman.

A group of about 120 of the most at-need students were hand selected by school staff to take part in a special opportunity presented by Sherman.

Each student was asked to sign a contract, agreeing to stay in school, improve their grades and be a good citizen.

In exchange, students each received a free backpack full of school supplies. If they fulfill their end of the bargain, the Richard Sherman Family Foundation will provide them with more supplies and brand new school clothes.

You have to give kids that motivation that anything is possible the sky is the limit regardless of where you come from what s happened in your life what adversity has happened you can achieve anything, said Sherman.

Makayla Coy has faced challenges while at Foster High School.

There have been many times I wanted to quit, she said.

After learning Sherman faced similar struggles, Coy is motivated to finish school and pursue a career as a doctor.

I can see that life is hard but I can do it, like he did, said Coy.

You have to make your way you have to find your way out, said Sherman.

Sherman also surprised the entire football team with brand new cleats.
