Dr. Emily Cooper of Seattle Performance Medicine spoke about common health myths and new scientific discoveries on Friday's KING 5 Morning News.

Some interesting health facts included:

  • Not all thin people are healthy, and not all overweight people are unhealthy. You can be healthy or unhealthy at any weight, Dr. Cooper said.
  • The amount of snacks a child eats does not affect whether they become obese or not. In fact, some studies suggest that youths who eat more snacks were less likely to be obese.
  • A new study published this month showed that teen girls with the highest levels of bisphenol A (BPA), a compound with hormone-like properties that may harm health, were in the highest body weight groups.
  • Giving children skim milk does not lead to thinner children. A recent study showed that children who drank whole milk were less likely to be overweight or obese than those that drank one percent or skim milk.
  • The more sleep teenagers get beyond seven and a half hours, the less likely they are to have a higher BMI, research shows.
