As the number of people applying for concealed weapons permits rises in Washington, concerns grow that state law is too lax.

The Department of Licensing reports that since shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary, 1,000 more permits were issued in King County.

The Law Enforcement Support Agency said it's seen a record demand for concealed weapon permits, with people often lining up before the doors open at 7:30 a.m.

Statewide the numbers are also up. An estimated one in every 12 people have a license to carry a concealed weapon.

Since 2006 the number of license holders jumped 64 percent, from 239,000 to 394,000.

Proposed legislation in Olympia would create a statewide database of mental health information to improve background checks, but some are concerned the database would create privacy issues.

While more people in Washington are applying for concealed weapons permits, the total number of permits have actually dropped in Pierce and Snohomish Counties.
