The Seattle Thunderbirds advanced to the second round of the Western Hockey League (WHL) playoffs with a 5-0 shutout of I-5 rival Everett Silvertips Saturday night at ShoWare Center in Kent. Coming off the heels of a 6-1 thrashing at Comcast Arena the night before, a more focused and determined T-Birds team hit the ice Saturday, clearly eager to put Game 4 in the rearview mirror.

Game 5 remained scoreless until more than halfway through the second period, when T-Birds center Scott Eansor flipped the puck past Everett goaltender Austin Lotz. Seattle added four more goals in the third period, including two from right wing Branden Troock, who left the game early in the first after an awkward collision with the wall. Seattle goaltender Taran Kozun stopped all 24 Silvertips shots to earn the second playoff shutout of his WHL career (his other shutout came during the 2012 WHL playoffs as a member of the Kamloops Blazers). Both teams seemed to work hard to keep emotions boiling over into penalties resulting in three total penalties, as opposed to between six and nine in the previous four games.

The T-Birds will face the Kelowna Rockets (formerly the Tacoma Rockets) in the second round of the WHL playoffs, with Games 1 and 2 taking place Thursday, April 3 and Saturday, April 5 in Kelowna, BC; and Games 3 and 4 on Tuesday, April 8 and Wednesday, April 9 at ShoWare Center in Kent (see full schedule below).
