Esquire's new show Friday Night Tykes is getting a lot of attention from parents. Shows like this often glorify bullying by coaches of young athletes. These shows are also creating a debate about what constitutes as effective coaching, and what is abusive coaching.

In a 2011 UK of 6,000 young adults, 75 percent reported emotional harm during their organized athletic sports. Of those who were bullied, a third pointed to the coach as the bully or instigator.Other reports have found more than 40 percent of student athletes report coach bullying.

Tips for Kids and Coaches:

  • Teach kids: Walk away, speak up, find a friend, ask others for help
  • Vet coaches in addition to team when selecting sports
  • Model good coaching for children; hold them accountable for helping others
