The fast-moving Skykomish River has claimed the life of an 18-year-old man from Startup.

It happened at Eagle Falls, just west of Bering. It's a popular spot on a hot summer day. On this day it was a group of friends who had gone to the river to cool off.

One of the teens had just made it across to a rope swing on the other side. It was his 18-year-old friend's turn.
About halfway across, he got into trouble and called out for help. Another friend attempted to go in after him, but the cold water kept him back.

The 18-year-old disappeared into the deep channel of the river and was eventually found by firefighters in kayaks responding to the scene. They performed CPR but it was too late. Medics say he had been under water for at least 35 minutes.

The river at Eagle Falls is all snowmelt so it's very cold, very fast, and at the point where he tried to cross, it is very deep. All were factors working against the young man, along with the fact he wasn't wearing a lifejacket.
