The first conceptual designs for a new NBA / NHL arena in Seattle were released Friday.

The designs by 360 Architecture, working for investor Chris Hansen, are considered prototypes and not final designs, but they do shed light on how the building might look in the SODO neighborhood just south of Safeco Field.

Three of the designs show what it might look like if existing arenas were placed in the same space. They include Portland s Rose Garden, Memphis' FedEx Forum, Miami s American Airlines Arena and San Antonio s AT&T Center.

The formal application said Hansen wants to build a 725,000-square foot arena, which would actually be smaller than the Portland, Memphis and San Antonio arenas, but bigger than the one in Miami.

Other diagrams illustrate where the arena space would be and how it would look in relation to Safeco Field and CenturyLink Field.

The designs indicate an interest in adding a practice facility on the same grounds as the arena.

The sketches and designs will be officially unveiled at a public meeting later this month.

An environmental impact study must be completed and Hansen, a Seattle native, must secure a team to be a tenant for the arena before construction can begin.

The local chapter of the ILWU says it intends to file suit to block the arena from being built in SODO. Port workers have expressed concerns over traffic congestion due to events at the arena.
