MOUNT VERNON, Wash. - The Marysville Police officer whose daughter was fatally shot Saturday has been placed on administrative leave for an investigation.

He was identified as Officer Derek Carlile. He has been with the department since 2009.

The 7-year-oldJenna Carlilewas shot by a sibling who found a loaded gun in the family's van as it was parked near the Stanwood City Hall. Officer Carlile and his wife were out of the vehicle at the time, but nearby.

The girl died Sunday at a Seattle hospital.

Mondaynight, Marysville police chief Rick Smith would notsay if the gun was the officer's servicesidearm, nor would he comment on department policy regarding thesafe storage of department-issued weapons.

Smith said officerstypically hold themselves to higher standardsthan the public in regards to securing their sidearms.

Smith said dealing with this event has been one of the most difficult things he's been apart of. He thank the community for its support and asked for compassion for the officer.
